What: Dr. Who Happy Hour
Every Friday from 7:00 to 8:00, we’ll be screening one episode of Dr. Who, starting from the beginning of the new series. This week is Rose, with delicious drink specials.
Where: Black Cat, 1811 14th St NW, Washington DC
Metro: Green/Yellow, U St/Cardozo/African American Memorial
How Much: Free
Pro Tip: This week’s episode is the rebooted series’ pilot episode, Rose. Looks like they’re gonna be trial-running the interest in a Who Happy Hour, so let’s all show up and let them know just how geeky DC is! For those of us who have not yet been initiated into the “wibbly wobbly, timey-wimey” travels of the Doctor: The Ultimate Trailer!
Up next: An old-school Field Day, a scifi/fantasy con run entirely by fans (and the magnificence of LeVar Burton, Spaceballs, and a Euro Board game afternoon . . .
What: Shore Leave 34
A fan-run science fiction convention that snags some surprisingly big-time actors and players to come make your weekend that much more awesome.
When: Aug 3-Aug 5
Where: 245 Shawan Rd., Hunt Valley, MD 21031
Metro: Nope. Maybe try the Marc train, then the Light Rail.
How Much: $85 for the full weekend, $30 Friday, $60 Saturday, $15 Sunday
Pro Tip: Two Words. LeVar Burton. Do you need more words? No, not really. But go ahead and ask him about a Reading Rainbow reboot. Cuz, let’s be honest, we’d all collapse crying with joy and then watch that shiz, like, immediately. Scifi/Fantasy Outpost will be meeting for dinner together at the Silver Spring Mining Co. to kickoff the whole weekend.
Upon arriving at the shop, all participants will be given flower necklaces and glow sticks. Thus outfitted, we will ride through the city happily making our way to Kingman Island, a tranquil hideaway on the Anacostia River. There we will be treated to private use of the open space to take in the casual island atmosphere and enjoy simple pleasures on a calm night.
Also at the party, we will provide drinks to help you cool off and there will be food options available for purchase from local food trucks (to be announced soon). But, you might consider bringing your own snacks and libations as well as a blanket to spread out. Do you have a rack or basket to carry things on your bike?
Where: Bicycle Space, 1019 7th Street NW, Washington DC
Metro: Green/Yellow, Mt Vernon Sq/7th St/ Convention Center
How Much: Free!
Pro Tip: These events are filled with chill peeps just wanting to enjoy DC the proper way, with bikes and slightly tipsy. I’d personally bring a card game or two, as well, just to break the ice. Since there are always at least five hundred photographers around, dress to have an epic night but don’t forget the bug spray.
What: 25th Anniversary Screening of Spaceballs
Where: AFI Silver, 8633 Colesville Rd, Silver Spring, MD
Metro: Red, Silver Spring
How Much: $11.50
Pro Tip: Get dinner with Geek Night Out afterwards so you can all ROFL and spit your food out trying to recap all the lines in the movie.
BBQ at the picnic tables. Family-friendly games on the shaded field, basketball court, handball wall, and the free batting cage. Additions to the food and drink are also welcome. Bring friends if you like since we may have missed someone.
Where: Capello Park, 5850 Wisconsin Ave, Chevy Chase, MD
Metro: Red, Friendship Heights

Pro Tip: As with most events happening outdoors nowadays, make sure to bring plenty of water, maybe even enough to share. Hopefully the weather gets cooler or less sticky, but for now, keep water and umbrella with you at all times.
It’s first Sunday Euro Games. I don’t own that many so I’m relying on all you Euro Game lovers to supply the group. So break your Catan, Dominion, and whatever else strikes your fancy.

Metro: Blue/Orange, McPherson Square
How Much: Free
Pro Tip: Bring your own games.
